On behalf of everyone at YMCA WA we’d like to extend a huge congratulations to Oscar Kaspi-Crutchett on receiving the Cultural Endeavours Award at the 2016 WA Youth Awards, held at Crown Perth on Friday night.
At just 15 years of age, Oscar is a role model to his peers and is a brilliant example of the power inspired young people can have when they’re given the chance to excel.
Oscar undertook his first experience in volunteering at the ripe age of 10; taking part in a two-week internship with former Member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan.
Oscar was a participant in the 2016 YMCA WA Youth Parliament program where he spoke passionately about a range of issues facing Western Australia’s young people.
A particular highlight of his time in Parliament House was his Adjournment Debate speech, during which he spoke eloquently and emphatically about the impact of the Orlando Massacre on the international queer community and the consequences of our leaders not acting when hate crimes occur.
In his spare time, Oscar volunteers by writing articles for LGBTI publications, supporting causes including mental health and racism in schools, and recently became youth representative of the ‘Save Safe Schools’ campaign.
We are thrilled to see Oscar rewarded for his work and look forward to being a part of his journey as he continues to have a positive impact on communities far and wide.
